Hi,

I have no idea what happened but I started up 8start from my usb drive and all of a sudden only 3 of about 25 apps had icons! I have removed and re-added them, deleted the whole 8start folder and started again but I can't get them back. When u add a new link, the two icons (.8st and .exe) usually show at the bottom of the "organize button" window but only the .exe has an icon.

Any ideas? I check around the forum and tried the new beta, but that doesn't help.

Thanks,

Alex

This may caused by the drive define in .8st / shortcut is no more exist or have been change. If you point the file in the flash drive, use the Link File with relative path to define the buttons

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

Each one of my links is already set as "relative".

Perhaps this will explain more: When I add a "new" link (one I have previously deleted and am now trying to add again to try and get the icon back) at the bottom of the Organize screen it is supposed to show two icons: the .exe and the .8st. It shows the .exe but the .8st shows no icon. So, even before I have finished adding the link I can see there will be no icon! Very strange.

Thanks again,

It only happend to the .8st files?
This is a very strange problem, can you open one of the .8st file and paste the content to here, so I can look into it.

Hi Andy,

Sincere apologies, as I really did appreciate your help here as well as the effort you've put into the program. But after trying to sort all this out over the weekend I deleted 8start and went back to another menu.

Thanks for your help and time,

-Alex

Hi Andy!
I had a very similar problem. First, I used the build 1.4 from december last year on my USB-flashdrive. Then there was some discussion about icon-problems in this forum and you provided a beta-version for 1.4.1. I downloaded it and it worked fine. But then, as I wanted to add a relative path to 8start, it didn't show any icon for it. It showed a textlable and was clickable, but there was no icon. While there was no problem with the links, I made with the old version of 8start.
Then I did the following:
I changed back to the old version - still no icons on the new items.
I added some - with icons
changed to beta-version again - still icons
And now the really strange: I added links in the newer version - WITH ICONS!!
I don't understand it. I didn't make any changes to the installation or the .8st-files. But I think the problem Wooks had, was actually the same.
Now I have changed to the 1.4.1build from march 07 and it works so far. But perhaps you should give the relative paths in the new version an extra test.

Dear Andy!
The problem keeps on. Every time, I switch to another computer, the Icons are gone.
So, until you can solve the problem, I stay with the old version . It's still available on www.portablefreeware.com under the following link:

Greetings...

Hi andygoh!
I could reproduce the same problem with 8start 1.4.1. I have it installed on a USB key and noticed the following:
- When I run 8start.exe manually by clicking on the .exe everything go fine.
- When 8start.exe is launched from an autorun.inf when I insert my USB device, folder icons are not displayed
- When I start 8start.exe from a Batch file (.bat with "start .\Launcher\8start.exe"), icons are also not displayed

It seems then that the problem comes when 8start is launched from an external "tool" autorun.inf or batch file. Perhaps it will help to find the reason why it fails.
Is the 1.4 version still available for download somewhere? The link mentioned by 9k.lai now points to 1.4.1... I don't need Vista support from 1.4.1 but would like to have the icons displayed (which seems to work with 1.4... I never tested).

I also added a screenshot at http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/4672/8startin5.jpg to show what happens in both scenarios...

A question...
If you change the icon to the folder, the problem persist?

(In some link I use [url="http://interfacelift.com/icons-win/details.php?id=981"]this[/url] set of icons)

Where should I change the folder's icon? With Windows Explorer? It's not possible to change the icon with Windows Explorer since the target directories are on a USB memory stick. I can customize icons for folders on my computer's hard disk but not those on my USB stick.

I also sometimes have the icon of a program -Putty- not appearing.

Here is what is displayed when started with a autorun.inf:
http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/9906/8start1wc6.jpg

And what should be displayed (what appears when I start 8start manually):
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6827/8start2ga3.jpg

I also did the same test on my computer at work (Win XP SP2) and the same effect was observed (icons not displayed). I also tried to clear the config file but the problem remains... mysterious!

Very mysterious; my idea is this

<b><u>First attempt</b></u>
- in your Hard Disk copy an icon inside a folder (example Ico.ico)
- change the folder icon with Windows ([url="http://www.worldstart.com/tips/misc-tips/chnge-foldr-icon.htm"]like this[/url])
Windows make an hide file inside the folder with this name Desktop.ini
- Edit the Desktop.ini with only this text
<i>[.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=Ico.ico
IconIndex=0</i>
- Copy the folder in your pen drive; add to 8start and test

(If for every folder rename the icon with Ico.ico you can copy the same Desktop.ini in every folders)

<b><u>Second attempt</b></u>
- copy an icon in your pen drive folder
- on Organize Button select the folder and assign the icon with bottom right browse
- Apply and test

:twisted:I know an other solution but it is extremely and incovenient:
after a manually runnig (8start is ok) select the cache png file (category00x.ong)
right click on it and make read only. With this system you can not change skin
and every button you add not showing!!!!

Note: Exist also some freeware application for change the icon folder like
[url="http://www.customizefolders.com/"]Customize Folder[/url] or [url="http://www.foldermarker.com/folder-marker-free.php"]Folder Marker Free[/url] ...

I thinking the problem is only on your folder but I see the problem is also on applications...

I can not make other!!!
:oops:Excuse for my english...

I know this problem with starting 8start from batch or autorun.
I wanted to start it with
Code:
start X:\8start\8start.exe

from a batchfile, which worked fine with the old version. Then I installed the new one and even after reinstalling the old, I kept having the same problem as sprotch.
I solved it, by changing the code to
Code:
cd X:\8start\
start 8start.exe

I don't know why, but it works for me.
