We don't know when our hardisk will become failure or when our computer attacked by the virus, important files may lose if it happend.

As the Cd / DVD burner is become popular now. I would recommend to backup the files in the CDR / DVDR / CDRW / DVDRW or other media regularly. ( Removable hardisk is most stable, DVDRW is most cheaper )

Abakt (A Backup Tool) - http://www.xs4all.nl/~edienske/abakt/index.html

After some searching, I found this useful freeware, it can backup our files to a zip file, I like zip format because it can be easily be extracted in other computer.

If you want to backup to DVD/CD RW directly, you have to format it by using InCD or other tool.

If your data is more than 4GB, you have to select the 7-zip as the backup format. I found 7-zip is quite slow, anyone facing the same problem?

This is the most complete zip / 7-zip backup solution I found, if you know other freeware which can do the backup job better, I would appreciate you can share with us.

Thanks snowshifter for your information, I just noticed this freeware is in the ubcd4win CD also, I will try it.

Boot from CD to backup, or backup directly when running Windows, which way is better?

I know that using Norton Ghost is boot from floppy disk/CD, then backup the image, is a better way.

I have not used it for a while - a UK magazine had Acronis True Image on a coverdisc - But running it within Windows always workEd. You can set it tosplit the image into smaller files depending on ehere you archive
them, CDR/DVD/external HDD.

Just remembered another essential back up tool called ERUNT.
What it does is automatically backup your registry the first time you boot your computer each day. Go get it from:

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

It has saved me from over enthusiastic registry cleaners on several occasions. Does anybody know a really good set of freeware registry tools? The best comprimise I've found so far is Registry Distiller at

http://www.codeode.com/registrydistiller/index.html
